empty now the house
clean the floors
where she played
polished the tables
grubby no more
where small five
fingered paws
pattered and splattered
food wanted and unwanted

empty the bathroom
the tub where she bathed
dry the towels
full the toothpaste tubes
she squeezed in ecstasy

where now her footprints
her cries of joy and sorrow
the secret language she spoke
that we never understood

empty too my heart
where she nested
and still nests
a wild bird flown
yet still possessed
within my empty hands
