List three books that have had an impact on you. Why?

I guess Hymns Ancient & Modern is one. Not because I sang from it in the choir in school, but also because it was used to smack me on the side of the head when I got notes or words wrong. Quite the impact that! And not at all what you were thinking about.

I also remember How to Grow Taller in Two Volumes. That really worked. You put one under each foot. But it was very difficult to walk very far. They weren’t stilts and no handholds presented themselves.

I am struggling to find a third book that seriously made an impact. I guess it might be the Oxford English Dictionary that I dropped on my foot when I had a stress fracture. That really was an ow-wow impact.

Mind you, I have read other books that have had a serious impact – emotionally and intellectually. But I am not sure you would be interested in them.

We travel a lot and listen to books rather than music. This weekend was Bill Maher’s new book and the my husband is on a history of the world trip – so we also listened to Blood and Iron about the rise of Germany.

I usually go back to the old classics of French and Spanish Literature. English Lit as well. I prefer re-reading to starting anew. I think in terms of authors rather than texts – Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Verlaine, Camus, Gide, Sartre, Prevert – Cervantes, Quevedo, Gongora, Galdos, Hierro, Valverde, Machado, Hernandez, Jimenez.

Very interesting- not what I was expecting, but pleasantly surprised. I myself enjoy the American classics of Steinbeck and Faulkner. I love books and am always eager to see what folks are reading.

I have Platero y yo beside me, on the table. Also Anam Cara by John O’Donohue. Apollinaire’s poems are close by, also those of Jose Hierro. A couple of anthologies stand ready too. I am listening to Antonio Machado and Miguel Hernandez on the car radio! Also Seamus Heaney and T.S. Eliot. Not all at once, of course.
