Sanctuary
We thought for a moment that, yes, we
were angels and yes, we were dancing
together on a pinhead with so many other
angels, and all of us as bright as butterflies
spreading our wings with their peacock eyes
radiant with joy and tears sparkling in time
to the celestial music that wandered up
and down inscrutable scales that bonded
the universe and set planets and spheres
spell-bound in that magic moment …
… and I still feel that pulsing in my head,
that swept-up, heart-stopping sensation
when the heavens opened and the eternal
choir raised us up from the earth, all earth
-bound connections severed and all of us
held safe in the palm of an Almighty hand.
Positively magical. I love the ‘angels dancing on the head of a pin’ as well. This is an older one, yes? I am glad it surfaced!

Not that old, actually. It’s from the stay in the cancer hospice in the summer of 2015. It was re-written, though. I joined the quilting group (!), one of only three or four males ever to quilt there, and this was a ‘magic moment’ when, ensconced among all the quilting omen, we suddenly all felt blessed.

Oh how lovely! There is amazing artistry in quilting. I am sometimes baffled as to how certain things got to be deemed ‘women’s work’ – what about sewing is so very female? As opposed to other kinds of craftwork.

My grandfather sailed around the world in a sailing ship. I still have his sewing kit. He taught me to sew and darn. The sailors in those days had t do their own repair work, in addition to mending the sails etc. The sewing lady was very pleased with my neat little stitches.

I love angels dancing on pinheads. A good cosmic revelatory vibe about this.

I have always enjoyed the cosmic order of the Neo-Platonists with their music of the spheres and the planets dancing to celestial music. It is a recurring theme in Spanish poetry. I think that Aquinas was the originator of the ‘how many angels can dance on the head of a pin’? but I could be wrong about that. I love the images though.

I think it was Aquinas as well. Did you know that towards the end of his life he regarded the Summa as a heap of straw.

I think this happens to a great many academics when they retire and receive enlightenment!

I always felt sorry for him after hearing that. His entire life’s work and he thinks it is meaningless.

Just re-discovered it this morning, thumbing back through my old journals and looking for something else. So glad I found it, so happy you liked it.

Thank you, Roger. A Haiku for Ricky Baker, the book that I am donating proceeds to fund art programs, should be live in Amazon by tomorrow. I’ll mail you a softcover as soon as I get them. That will take a few more days to go live. I’m going to start begging all my friends for reviews…Lol

That’s great news, Tanya. Congratulations. Enhorabuena as they say in Spain.

I will announce it as soon as it is live. Hopefully, it will help get pens and paintbrushes into the hands of children who really need that outlet.

This is a wonderful and generous idea, Tanya. I do hope it goes well for you. NB Don’t send me a book … let me buy one and review it. It’s the least I can do.

I have just submitted the eBook to Amazon. It should be live by tonight or tomorrow. 70% of the eBook sales will go to art-programs…cross your fingers. The margins are smaller on the paperback, but the dollar amounts are good, a little south of $2 per book on average. Once it is live, I’m going to ask my friends to get anyone they can think of to review it. Thanks again! I’m excited.
