Dog Daze
the sad dog hounds me
sends me spinning
sets me back on my heels
makes me chase my tail
and snap at shadows
as they ghost
through my mind
memories deceive
desperate I lap
at licks of false hope
a shifting salt field
that increases my thirst
driving me on and on
deeper into ragged clouds
and the storm that lays waste
to the dog daze of my mind
I get those ‘chasing the tail’ stretch of days where it seems like I’m busy but nothing gets accomplished. Agh, may they pass quickly!

The metaphors rush in and out and none of them make sense yet they demand to be heard and won’t stay in place when we tell them to. Like naught children, standing in a corner of the classroom, they shuffle their feet and mutter to themselves and we are left chasing our own tails and wondering …

Then you must make notes of them so they can be fashioned into something later. I have a collection of ‘great’ sound sounding phrases and bits of dialogue I’m saving to put into future stories, etc. Someone famous said to never throw anything you’ve written away and I’ve followed that advice!

I do Meg … then I lose them and discover them again and lose them again … they have lives of their own and they are not very obedient.

Lots happening here, some good, some not so good, nothing bad … the river is way over flood level, but we are safe. Rain forecast for next week … we’ll just have to hope.

Oh boy…. I guess the snow has finally melted. Let’s hope the waters recede enough before it rains to absorb some more!

I just came back from downtown Fredericton, water everywhere and several streets shut. We have deep woods snow up north still to come and it is cloudy with rain a possibility. What a mess. I should be able to get to the poetry reading tomorrow … but if the water is getting higher …

Be safe Roger. Don’t take any chances!

You do like the metaphor, and the layers. And the deeper meaning. Fortunately, do do I. Much respect Chuck

Thanks for visiting, Chuck, and for taking the time to comment. I have revised this poem at least twice since I first posted it … one of those dog-chase-tail poetry days.

There are days like these … I guess we all get them … the fewer the better …

At least, the good we get from them is that we appreciate the days opposite them even more when we experience. ❤
