24 December 1966 – 24 December 2016
This what all those poems were leading up to:
Clare and I, married for fifty years today,
unbelievable.
Share the joy with us.
Blessings to all.
Roger and Clare.
“Brightly Dawns Our Wedding Day” from The Mikado
Goodrich Castle
I thought I had felt everything worth feeling
until I looked on Goodrich Castle and explored
with you its walls and towers and labyrinth
of inter-connecting corridors and rooms.
Do you recall the way its old stone bones
thrust out from that pelvis of red bedrock?
Civil War tore down its curtain walls,
fired its stables, drove horses and people mad
with fear. Sometimes at night fate mans
the pumps of my blood and sends alarums
surging through my arteries. No. I don’t want
to die before you. I don’t want to leave you
here, alone, defenseless, besieged by memories
that gnaw at you and devour your days, like flames.
Beautiful and sweet. Congrats and Happy 50 years Wedding Anniversary to you Roger and your wife.

Thank you: I love the madrigal from G & S. It’s meant to be one of the finest in the English music world. I played it regularly all over Christmas!

You’re welcome. I never heard of it. But I looked it up on you tube. I listened to it and I love it. 🙂

I love the version I tagged on the Fifty Years page! There are several versions of it on the Tube. I guess it’s then a question of what you like.

I watched three versions of it, its nice to see them in costumes and doing some acting. But the ones you tagged in your article their version is a lot better. 🙂 I started to love it.

Interesting: I feel the same way. I think the amateur companies in particular and the local Gilbert and Sullivan Societies are stuck with the voices of their members. The group that sings ‘plain clothes’ on stage have a better balance of better voices. That’s how I read it anyway. So glad you like it. I should put more G & S on the blog. There are some wonderful songs in his ‘comic’ operas. maybe I’ll do a Musical Monday feature … now that’s worth thinking about.

The day was great: more important, we’ve had a fantastic fifty years! Looking forward to the next fifty now: day by day, week by week, month by month … it’s like an accumulator in a betting shop.

I like accumulators, that hope in the beginning that if the gods smile and everything falls into place that it will be massive. I am glad that it did for you and Claire.

Thank you so much. We are planning for the next fifty … but taking them one by one … and a day at a time.

Somehow, reminded of the series called “Outlander.” My wife, Ann, and I have been married for nearly 57 years. In the beginning, we explored desert ruins and hillsides in New Mexico, then on to nearly 20 years of Army life, which included exploring glaciers and hillsides in Alaska. We have since explored castles in England and France. We’ve explored ancient Native American cliffside ruins, and explored the Navajo Nation in Arizona and New Mexico. We survived the demands of war years, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We’ve had a happy life. Now we plan to explore castles in the sky.

Sounds fascinating. We will be hot on your heels! Our adventures were in the Oaxaca Valley in Mexico. Spent several periods there at Monte Alban and other sites. They come through in some of my earlier writings on the blog. I used to investigate English / Welsh Castles and Arthurian ruins. Rex quondam, rexque futurus. Thank you for visiting.

Thanks for visiting and commenting, Victor. Raining today, but fifty years ago the snow came tumbling out of the sky: 18 inches on that one day alone. See you in the New Year, I hope.

Thank you, Tanya. It will be a very quiet day. Just the two of us, as always, and then we will go out to dinner at a friend’s house this evening. It’s hard to believe it: fifty years. Where did they all go?

My grandmother turns 90 in a few months. She reminds me often that, looking back, it’s just a breath. I try to remember that when I’m tapping my feet impatiently.
Enjoy each breath of the day with Clare!😊

That’s a nice image, Tanya. Indeed, we hold one second, no more, no less, in our fingers at any one time. The rest is all past or future and the present so very brief. Your grandmother sounds like a great lady.
