Your Voice
Love poem
Still in the still of the rain
I sense you near.
The room is full
of the scent of emptiness
yet even the silence
turns my head.
The walls expand
to enclose the world.
With gaudy flags
on a colored map
I mark your progress
through my memory,
upwards and inwards
your progress to my heart.
A moth glistens in the circle
cast by my reading light.
Your stealthy footsteps
sound in the corridor.
A voice, your voice,
drifts through the night
Beautiful and elegiac Roger

Thank you. This is the first in an old series rewritten. It is a mystery sequence and all will be revealed at the end. I am wondering whether to comment or just to set the poems out.

Sent the poems out and comment at the end. A bit of mystery never did any harm. That’s my advise anyway.

That’s what I’m going to do. As Lorca wrote: “Solo el misterio nos hace vivir, solo el misterio.” Only the mystery keeps us alive, only the mystery.

Agreed, or as Francis Bacon said ‘the artist job is to deepen the mystery’.

It’s 2:00 am chez toi! I’m ready for bed. Too much Trump on tv over here. Oh dear: he’s going to attack me on twitter.

Thanks, Tanya. This poem goes right back to the seventies (maybe even the late sixties) when I really was a beginning poet.

I am thinking of reworking Secret Garden, a little book I wrote for Clare some twenty years ago. This poem antedates that book by another twenty years! Like the roots of your tanka tree: we go very deep.
